Historical (My Cannon, not actual)-
With the growing decline of the Imperial factions and "Enemy" star fighters constantly improving, One Imperial leader began to design newer fighters to try to match the current generation of Republic fighters.
With the spare parts from Sienar Fleet Systems becoming less and less available, the TIE Trident was redesigns with the same cockpit design as the TIE Reaper. Despite a recall for the older Mk 1 Tridents, many pilots had refused to upgrade to the Mk 2, preferring to put up with the hectic work schedules, part shortages, and delays in repairs. However because of this, many squads are a mix of Mk 1s and Mk 2s.

Personal note-
When I created the Trident, the thoughts were towards something like the original TIE fighter, a simple compact fighter with good speed and maneuverability. (Personally I don't like the original TIE, namely the large hexagonal solar panels.) The thought was, I wanted a Swarm fighter (good in large numbers) but I also wanted an Independent fighter.
So for example, if it came a crossed a X-wing, it had a 50/50 chance of kicking butt and coming home intact.
When I was designing the different Ties I was playing the KotOR (Knights of the Old Republic) and seen the Sith fighter. Obviously I was Impressed with the design, hence the look of the trident.

The Mk 2 Trident is almost the same as the Mk 1; the only real difference is the redesign cockpit. It was always my plan to change the cockpit style to what the Reaper cockpit. And seeing it in 3D, I think it turned out pretty darn well.

(I'm sorry that it took me so long to post this, after the coputer crashed the last time I was doing other things and so this was put on the back burrner, so to speak. )
